| Summarit-M 75 (11645) | Leica M | 2007β2014 | 4048649β4064940 (Leica Wiki, 2007β2008) 4116337 upward, end unrecorded (Leica Wiki, 2009β2010) up to 4240378, start unrecorded (Leica Wiki, 2011β2012) | No figure published |
- The four Summarit-M lenses β 35, 50, 75 and 90 β were announced together on 3 August 2007, with deliveries beginning at the end of November 2007, so the 75 was on sale for barely a month of its first catalogue year. Leica's announcement made a point of the spherical, non- aspherical design, the shared 39mm filter thread, the Leitz-Norm engraving font and red buttons matching M lenses of the 1960s.
- The Leica Wiki's serial table is headed "Serial numbers compiled from known lenses". It is a record of observed extremes, not a factory batch list: each row's start carries a leading dash and its end a trailing dash, meaning the true bounds lie at or beyond the numbers printed. Leica has published no per-model batch list for the Summarit-M range of the kind that exists for the older Leitz lenses.
- This lens has the emptiest table of the four Summarits. Of its four rows only the first, 2007β2008, has both ends; 2009β2010 has no end, 2011β2012 has no start, and 2013β2014 is blank at both ends β no example from the last two years of a seven-year production run has been reported to the wiki at all. Three of the four Total cells read "unknown".
- The one Total figure the table does give, "16,292+" for 2007β08, is end minus start plus one β 4064940 β 4048649 + 1 β the width of the observed span rather than a count of lenses. Those numbers are shared with every other Leica lens of the period: the 35mm f/2.5 Summarit-M's own 2007β08 span, 4049183β4063533, sits inside this one almost exactly, which two different lenses could only do inside a single common sequence.
How to tell them apart
- Focuses to 0.9 m β the APO-Summicron 75 reaches 0.7 m

- The rule. Leica draws Summarit-M numbers from the single sequence it uses for every lens it makes, so a copy is dated against the general Leitz/Leica lens year list rather than against anything particular to this model: 4034901β4057000 is 2007, 4057001β4080000 is 2008, 4080001β4100000 is 2009, 4100001β4115000 is 2010, 4115001β4130000 is 2011, and the published list stops at 4130001 for 2012 (camera-wiki.org, citing Puts's Pocket Pod and Pont's Les Chiffres ClΓ©s; Leica Rumors prints the same bands as far as 2009). Above 4130000 no general year list has been published, and the only dates on offer are the Leica Wiki's per-model table, compiled from lenses people have reported rather than from factory records. On this lens that table is half empty, so the general list does most of the work.
- the first two digits
- Which generation. 40, 41 or 42 is an f/2.5 Summarit-M of 2007β2014; 43 is the f/2.4 that replaced it in 2014. Every f/2.5 number the Leica Wiki records across the four focal lengths falls between 4038014 and 4240378, every f/2.4 number between 4302424 and 4306336, and all four f/2.4 data sheets give the inscription as 43XXXXX.
- 4048649β4064940
- The Leica Wiki's observed span for 2007β08, and the one band on which the two published sources agree: the general year list puts 4048649 in 2007 and 4064940 in 2008. One lens inside it, 4048960, is flagged on the wiki as reported stolen.
- 4116337
- The lowest number the Leica Wiki records for its 2009β2010 row; it gives no upper bound. The general year list places 4116337 in 2011 instead. Both are recorded here.
- 4240378
- The top of the wiki's 2011β2012 row, with no lower bound given, and the highest number recorded for any f/2.5 Summarit-M at any focal length. It is flagged as reported stolen.

What reviewers say
- Jason Schneider (Leica Society International) (blog) β Dismissed on arrival as a discount lens, the six-element four-group 75 Summarit is now vindicated: "when it comes to sheer image quality, gorgeous natural rendition, and beautiful bokeh the 75mm f/2.5 Summarit-M proudly upholds the Leica optical tradition, and is now considered a classic not only by many Leica M shooters but by legions of pros."
- Patrick (Finding Range) (blog) β At 345 grams it handles like a 50 and is "compact, light, and unobtrusive", the rendering is "bitingly sharp" and "easily one of the sharpest lenses that I've ever used" with bokeh that is smooth if not creamy, and against the APO-Summicron's price he says "I wholeheartedly recommend it." single source, unconfirmed
History
Until 2007 the 75mm frameline had two lenses behind it: an f/1.4 Summilux and, from 2005, an APO-Summicron. Both were expensive and one was very large. The Summarit is the ordinary option, six elements in four groups at f/2.5, focusing to 0.9 m.
That minimum distance is the compromise. The APO-Summicron reaches 0.7 m, and at 75mm the last 20 centimetres are where portrait work happens.
This history is AI-written, from the sources listed at the foot of the page. Where the record is silent it says so rather than filling the gap β but no human wrote these sentences.
