- A small **60** on the barrel. The convention of the period engraved the digits either side of the decimal point without the point itself, so 60 denotes a measured focal length of 66.0mm. Leica's own description of the original's front ring names three things engraved there β the production number, the initial calculation number C283, and a thirteen-digit US Navy order number. The order number VH6760-168-3240 is thirteen characters once its hyphens are set aside, of which two are letters, so Leica's "thirteen-digit" is loose but its arithmetic lands. So 283 is the calculation number C283 and the four digits after the hyphen are the production count. It is the same convention as the ELCAN 50mm's 276- numbers, and as the Canadian Elcan-R lenses the Leica Wiki does document: the 180mm f/3.4 is inscribed 303-00XX against code C-303, the 450mm f/5.6 is C-329, the 75mm f/2 is C-341. No cross-section of the original has ever been published. The only optical diagram in circulation is Leica's own drawing of the 2026 Summicron-M 66 f/2, which is a different computation β calculation number B1047 against the original's C283 β and a different element count. History
There are two ELCANs made for the American military and they are not the same lens. The 50mm f/2 is the KE-7Aβs lens, type 276, four air-spaced elements, issued with an Army contract camera and sold to the public in a run of fifty-five. This is the other one: a 66mm f/2 for United States Naval Intelligence, type 283, of which none was ever sold to anybody. Walter Mandler designed both at Midland, Ontario. Leica quotes him on what the Navy asked for β a lens that βlooked like any other but delivered an unparalleled level of resolutionβ β which is the whole brief in a sentence, and explains the focal length. Sixty-six millimetres is not a styling choice. It is where the resolution, the contrast and the size of the barrel could all be had at once. The quotation reaches Leica through the collector Rolf Fricke, which is worth knowing, because Fricke turns out to be the route by which almost everything first-hand about this lens survives.
