Zenzanon-PS Fisheye 35mm f/3.5 Bronica SQ 2001–2003 β€” β€”
  1. Eleven elements in eight groups: Japanese Wikipedia (8羀11枚), Tamron's US product page and camera-wiki's table agree. The 180° diagonal coverage, the rear 32.5 mm filter thread and the built-in hood are from Tamron's US page.
  2. 0.28 m, f/3.5–22, 91 mm long by 98 mm across and 960 g are from Tamron Japan's SQ-Ai table; camera-wiki agrees on 91 mm, 0.28 m, 960 g and the 32.5 mm rear filter.
  3. Dates. No launch date has been found. The lens is not in Tamron's US SQ price list of April 1996; it is on Tamron Japan's SQ-Ai page (about 2001) and in the US list of 2004. The first year given here, 2001, is therefore the earliest listing found, and the true launch falls somewhere between 1996 and 2001. Production of the SQ-Ai and its lenses ended at the end of September 2003 (Tamron notice via camera-wiki).
  4. The only price found is Tamron's US list price of 2004, $4,440, far above the other wide-angles in the same list ($2,718 for the 40, $2,372 for the 50). No yen price has been found.
How to tell them apart (expand)
  • Bronica SQ four-claw bayonet with the Seiko #0 leaf shutter inside the lens and no shutter-speed ring; aperture and focus rings and a T setting only
  • The only fisheye for the SQ and the only SQ lens with a rear filter thread: 32.5 mm at the back, a fixed hood at the front; 960 g, heavier than every SQ prime up to the 200 mm (camera-wiki table)
  • Not the Zenzanon-PE Fisheye 30mm f/3.5 for the ETR (6Γ—4.5), the other Bronica fisheye, which is shorter in focal length and will not mount on an SQ; the PS suffix and 35mm on the ring settle it

Zenzanon-PS Fisheye 35mm f/3.5:

  • Engraved ZENZANON-PS FISHEYE; the bulbous front under a fixed hood and the rear filter thread set it apart from every other SQ lens

History

The Zenzanon-PS Fisheye 35mm f/3.5 is the one fisheye made for the Bronica SQ and the last wide-angle added to its range. It is a full-frame diagonal fisheye, 180Β° corner to corner on the 6Γ—6 frame, with eleven elements in eight groups, a closest focus of 0.28 m, and a fixed hood over the front element, so filters go in a 32.5 mm thread at the rear β€” the only SQ lens built that way. At 91 mm long, 98 mm across and 960 g it is heavier than any SQ prime up to the 200 mm. Like every SQ lens it carries a Seiko #0 leaf shutter that the body times electronically, 8 s to 1/500 on the SQ, SQ-A, SQ-Am and SQ-B and 16 s to 1/500 with T and B on the SQ-Ai, with a mechanical 1/500 without a battery, and it mounts on every SQ body.

It is a PS-generation lens with no S predecessor, and a late one: it does not appear in Tamron’s US price list of April 1996, is on Tamron Japan’s SQ-Ai page of about 2001, and is in the US list of 2004 at $4,440, far above the other wide-angles in the same list. The launch therefore falls between 1996 and 2001, and the 2001 given above is the earliest listing found rather than a release date. Production of the SQ-Ai and its lenses ended at the end of September 2003, after which stock was sold until it ran out.

No review, test or user account of the lens has been found in English or Japanese, which fits a dear and specialised lens from the last years of the system. Left open: the launch year, a yen price, the blade count and any production figure.
